The true value of Tesla’s semi-truck offering will remain a mystery until its price is revealed (Walmart, care to share?) Its list of features however is so compelling that the upfront cost almost feels like an afterthought. Here are the 10 key ways Tesla Semi promises to outperform traditional diesel trucks:

  1. Acceleration – Empty, the Tesla Semi can go 0 – 60 in 5 seconds. Full (carrying the legal limit of 80,000 pounds), it can do so in only 20 seconds.
  2. Incline Performance – At a 5% incline Diesel trucks can hit an average top speed of 45 mph. Tesla Semi can reach 65 mph, drastically cutting down on drive time.
  3. Drag – It’s aerodynamic design and flat bottom benefit Tesla Semi with a drag coefficient of .36. This is closer to a Bugatti than a diesel truck, which which averages .65 – .7.
  4. Auto-Pilot – Tesla’s intelligent driving assistance will come standard with Semi. Every with a medical emergency Semi will stay in its lane, turn on the hazards and decelerate at a safe speed.
  5. Jack-knife Prevention – With independent motors on each wheel Tesla claims to have made jack-knifing (the dread of any truck driver) an impossibility.

  10. Information Access – The companion App with Tesla Semi allows you to run diagnostics, and alerts you ahead of time when it needs preventative maintenance.

Perhaps most impressive is the feature Tesla managed to simply not lose in: Range. Eking out a 500 mile range on a single charge – the longest you would realistically want to drive before taking a break anyway – Tesla Semi can handle 80% of trips on a single charge. Semi promises a 20% cheaper total operating cost over diesel ($1.26 per mile vs $1.51), and that number gets even cheaper when operating a string of Semis in a convoy.

Tesla will guarantee Semi for 1,000,000 miles, and will begin production in 2019.
